CENSUS TRACT, BLOCK GROUP & BLOCK
I. Question: Find the census tract, block group, and block numbers of 1630 Holloway Avenue, San Francisco, California 94132.
Go to American Factfinder.
1. From the "Fast Access to Information", enter 94132 in the search box.
2. Enter 1630 Holloway Ave. in the "Street Address" search box.
3. Click on Census Tract 332.01 (to the left of the "Street Address" search box).
4. Click on the Reference Map (on the right side above the statistics).
5. The map shows the Census Tract 332.01, Block Group 1, and Block 1006.
(See the Boundaries guide on the left side for the colors denoting the different categories.)
What census tracts are around Census Tract 332.01, Block Group 1, and Block 1006?
Click on the Reference Map (on the right side above the statistics). The neighboring census tracts are 604, 331, 309, 332.02.
ZIP CODE
II. Question: Using the above information, find the total population, median age, number of median age for 65 yrs. and over and median household income for zip code 94132 and San Francisco.
1. Toggle between the 94132 link and the San Francisco city (or county) link to find the numbers.
DATA SETS AND SUMMARY FILE 1 (SF-1)
III. Question: Using Data Sets and Census 2000 Summary File 1, find a Detailed table showing median age for the population (all races) by census tract in Alameda. Then add Alameda County to the table.
Summary File data (100%) are available down to block level--presents count and information [age, sex,race, Hispanic/Latino origin, household relationship, whether residence is owned or rented] collected from all people and housing units.
1. Select Data Sets from the left side menu, and Decennial Census from the pull-down menu.
2. Click on Detailed Tables. The default is Census 2000 Summary File 1 (SF-1).
3. In the geographic type box, select Census Tract.
4. Select California in the State box, and Alameda in the County box.
5. Select All Census Tracts, then hit the Next button.
6. Do a Keyword search for Median Age.
7. Select P13. Median Age by Sex [Total Population].

IV. Question: Using Data Sets and Census 2000 Summary File 3, determine the Block Group in San Mateo with the highest median CONTRACT rent.
Summary File data 3 (sample data) Data are only available down to block group level--presents detailed population and housing data (such as place of birth, education, employment status, valuse of housing unit, year structure built) collected from a 1-in6 sample and weighted to represent the total population.
1. Select Data Sets from the left side menu, Decennial Census and Census 2000 Summary File 3 (SF-3).
2. Select the geo within geo tab. Then select block groups/Fully or partially contained within Place.
3. Select state California, place San Mateo city/all block groups, then ADD/NEXT.
4. Choose a table selection method, select Subject. Scroll down to renter statistics and click on SEARCH.
5. Highlight table, ADD and SHOW RESULTS.
CUSTOM TABLES USING CENSUS 2000 SUMMARY FILE 3 (SF-3)
V. Question: Using Data sets and Census 2000 Summary File 3, develop a custom table that lists all census tracts in San Francisco county, California, that have at least 100 households with an income of $200,000 or more. You will filter the data rows to select only the census tracts with more than 100 households in the selected income category and you will sort the rows to determine which tracts have the highest number of households in the selected income category.
- Select Data Sets/Census 2000 Summary File 3.
- Click Custom Table.
- Choose a selection method to select your geography. Factfinder offers the following methods: List (default), name search, address search, map and geo within geo (provides capabilities to select geographies contained within another geography).
- Use the List method to display a list of geographic areas.
- Select Census tract in the drop-down geographic type box.
- Select California (state), San Francisco (county), all Census tracts (select one or more geographic areas), then click ADD and NEXT.
- Scroll down to P52. Household Income in 1999, and click on GO.
- Check the box next to $200,000 in Select one or more data elements and ADD/NEXT.
- Check the button for P052017 - Households: Household income; $200,000 or more, then NEXT.
- Under Display rows, select Greater than or equal to in the drop-down menu and type 100 in the box on the right side, then click OK. This will display rows for census tracts where there are at least 100 households with income over $200,000.
- Select Show Result to display the custom table.
- Click OPTIONS and select Sort Rows. You may want to sort the rows in ascending or descending order and you can choose more than one element to sort by. This examply has only one element.
- To sort in descending order click on the descending radio button next to the drop-down box, and click on UPDATE.
- Number of census tracts in San Francisco county with an income of $200,000 or more: 65 census tracts.
- Census tract with the most households with an income of $200,000 or more: Census tract 132, San Francisco County—761 households.
DATA SETS AND SUMMARY FILE 4 (SF-4)
Summary File 4 contains tabulation of population and housing data collected from a sample of the population. The data are shown down to the census tract level for 336 races, Hispanic or Latino, American Indian and Alaska Native, and ancestry categories.
VI. Question: Using the Data sets, Census 2000 Summary File 4, determine the number of Filipinos with a professional degree by sex for the population 25 years and over in Marin County and San Mateo County.
1. Choose Data Sets/Summary File 4/Detailed Tables.
2. Select geography type by clicking on County, San Mateo County and Marin County. ADD and NEXT.
3. Select tables by clicking on PCT 64 – Sex by Educational Attainment for the Population 25 years and over. NEXT.
4. Select population group Filipino alone or in any combination, then ADD, and SHOW RESULT.
VII. Question: Using Data sets. Census 2000 Summary File 4, Custom Tables, Geo with Geo, and filtering, develop a list of places in San Mateo where the median household income for whites is greater than the California median household income of $47,493.
1. Choose Data Sets/Summary File 4/Custom Tables.
2. 2. Select the geo within geo tab, to choose census tracts within a Place/California/San Mateo City, All Census tracts, ADD/NEXT.
3. Highlight PCT 89. Median Household Income in 1999, GO, then check the box next to PCT 89, ADD/NEXT.
4. Click on the radio button next to PCT089001 - Households: Median household income in 1999 and click on NEXT.
5. The default for the pull-down box is greater than, type in 47493 into the box on the right of “greater than”, click OK.
6. Click 'Next' to select Population Groups.
7. Select race to by highlighting White alone, click on Show Result.
8. You may change the order of rows to ascending or descending by clicking on Options.
THEMATIC MAP: POVERTY LEVEL
VIII. Using keyword searching, find a 2000 thematic map that shows the percent of persons in poverty by Census tract in San Francisco. Identify the census tract that has the highest percent of persons below the poverty level.
1. Type “poverty by percent” in the keyword search box on the Factfinder search screen. Select most recent data from all programs in the pull-down menu.
2. Scroll down the search results to Thematic Maps to Census 2000 Summary File 3 (SF-3) Sample Data.
3. Select TM P067 Percent of persons below the poverty level in 1999;2000.
4. Use breadcrumb on the top of the page (“You are here”) to change Geography.
5. Use Selection Method List; select County/California/San Francisco County, then Show Result.
6. The next map will show San Francisco, use the “+” feature to enlarge the map.
7. Select Census Tract in the pull-down menu on the top edge of the map (“Display map by”).
8. Click map to I (Identify-geo name and data value) button at the top of the map to identify census tracts and statistics.
Let’s do the same search as above using more recent data from the American Community Survey,
1. Type “poverty by percent” in the keyword search box on the Factfinder search screen. Select most recent data from all programs in the pull-down menu.
2. Scroll down the search results to 2006 American Community Survey.
3. Select M1701: Percent of People Below Poverty Level in the Past 12 Months: 2006.
4. Use breadcrumb on the top of the page (“You are here”) to change Geography.
5. Use Selection Method List; select State/California, then Show Result.
6. The next map will show San Francisco, use the “+” feature to enlarge the map.
7. Select Public Use Microdata Area (sub-county & sub-place analysis of 100,000 persons or more) in the pull-down menu on the top edge of the map (“Display map by”).
8. Click map to I (Identify-geo name and data value) button at the top of the map to identify Public Use Microdata Area and statistics.
